The Art School Application

Art school applications are long and boring like any other application for higher education. However, if you are prepared and have all the necessary information gathered ahead of time, filling out the form will go quickly and your first step toward attending art school will be complete!

We've compiled this list of the most common art school application information requirements to make your life a little easier.

Art school applications are usually broken down into categories, grouped by type of information requested, often as follows:

General Info

  • Applicant name
  • Address
  • Contact info (phone #, email address)
  • Social Security Number
  • Approximate family income (may not be required)
  • Citizenship status (Are you a US citizen?)
    • International Students will need to provide alien registration number / visa type / green card, expiration date, and TOEFL score.
  • Ethnic / racial group
  • Criminal history (if applicable)
  • Enrollment status (freshman, transfer, graduate)
  • Student status: part-time, full-time, continuing education, certificate
  • Desired term of entry (fall, winter, spring, summer)

Parent / Guardian Information

  • Parent / guardian name (both father and mother)
  • Address
  • Contact info (phone #, email address)
  • Employer

Program of Study

Employment Information (not required for undergrads)

  • Occupation
  • Present employer name, address, contact info

Education History

  • High school information (name, address, type of school [public, independent, religious, home school])
  • High school date of graduation
  • High school GPA
  • SAT or ACT score
  • Name of any colleges or universities attended, date attended, degree, and major
  • Have you previously applied to this school?
  • What other schools are you applying to?

Essay / Statement of Intent

  • Short essay describing your personal interest in art/design or in the specific program of choice (each school may have a different personal essay topic)


  • List any honors or extracurricular experience related to your intended program
  • Financial assistance - Are you applying for financial assistance (federal, state, or alternative loans)
  • Housing - If attending a campus location, will you need housing?
  • Recommendation letters - 1-3 letters, to be filled out by evaluators and mailed independently
  • Portfolio and inventory sheet (only necessary if applying by mail)

Application Fee

  • Application processing fee is usually between $25 and $100. More for international applicants
  • Online application fees are usually significantly less than paper application fees
  • Payment by credit card or check/money order
